Low‑Tox Living

Our family’s slow, faithful shift toward a home that honors God’s creation—using simple, natural products and making what we can with our own hands.

Herbs, simple ingredients, and handmade apothecary items

A Slow, Faithful Shift

I didn’t wake up one day with a perfectly low‑tox life. It started with a question: What would it look like to steward our bodies and home in a way that honors the Lord and the way He designed us? One small change led to another—reading labels, learning the dangers of synthetics, choosing simple ingredients, and practicing old‑fashioned skills that make our home feel like a little apothecary.

We don’t do perfection. We do progress. We choose the highest‑quality essential oils and cleanest products we can find, use what we have, and make what we’re able. It’s slower, but it’s also richer, and it’s taught us to trust God with the process.

Scripture that guides me: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31

My Approach

1) Simplicity

Fewer ingredients, recognizable words, made at home or locally when possible.

2) Stewardship

Choose products that care for our bodies and the earth God made.

3) Faithfulness

Small, steady steps; no guilt, just grace and growth.

Simple Starter Swaps

Here are easy ways to start. Pick one from each list and give yourself time to adjust.

Home

  • Swap synthetic fragrance sprays, candles, and plug-ins for a simple essential‑oil diffuser blend
  • Choose or make toxin‑free laundry detergent + add a few drops of essential oil to wool dryer balls
  • Use toxin-free cleaners made with simple plant-based ingredients like essential oils

Body

  • Fragrance-free lotion + a drop of your favorite essential oil
  • Mineral‑based deodorant
  • Simple lip balm (beeswax + oil)

Kitchen

  • Glass jars for storage instead of plastic when possible
  • Stainless or cast‑iron cookware for daily use
  • Herbal tea or water with electrolytes instead of sugary drinks

Note: none of this is medical advice. Always research, patch‑test, and choose what fits your family.

What I Look For

  • No phthalates, parabens, synthetic fragrance, or synthetic dyes
  • Transparent, short ingredient lists
  • High‑quality essential oils from trusted sources with transparent practices (i.e. I can visit the farms, see their practices, and talk to the scientists)
  • Ethically sourced botanicals, recyclable packaging when possible, and companies with values
